Why are you doing Yoga?

I see it happening very often: people come for a yoga class (actually, any class) without own motivation acknowledgement. Yes, they want to be healthier, happier, calmer, but when it comes to postures many get distracted and forget own goals.. Not all, but many don’t make any attempts to stop planning their future activities or remembering their past situations; very few practice being here and now, being aware.
We started our class yesterday with a cornerstone of daily practice.
Why are you standing here? What do you want to reach? What is your goal for today’s class?
Finding an answer and reminding yourself about it makes your practice more conscious and deep. If you get distracted and superficial, your goal will start slipping away.
Staying “here and now”, remembering your motivation, letting all thoughts pass you by, paying attention to inner feelings – this will make your practice times more effective.
Some will find that their motivation is to get healthy overall or heal some specific disease. This is what most people try to find in yoga when they start. If you keep this goal in mind, your body will prompt you ways to reach it (stretching a little bit more here or holding yourself there; forwarding your breath flow to certain point, - it can show up as a wish to do something, if you listen attentively).
Some will discover that their goal is further ahead and they want to reach inner peace, observe inner silence, transform own essence for better.. We have to fully realize what our next step is in order to get there, in order to see the right path, which is a little bit different for everyone. Listen to yourself and keep the internal work for your goal during the practice.
May all be happy, may all be free!
